I'm such a fucking glutton for punishment, for real. Total masochist.

It's International Blog Against Racism Week. And I can't seem to get my LJ act together and I'm sick with an evil death cold and to add insult to injury, I got my period this morning. *throws hands up* I just can't brain. So I'm gonna cheat.

And, I figure, there's no greater cheat to call upon for this topic than the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King.

We all know about that famous speech, the famous words about Dr. King's dream. We read it in school or we've heard a thousand soundbites on TV, or whatever, blah blah blah. Right? It's a cliche, right?

Which is kind of like saying: "O shur, I no that Hamlet play rly gud! '2 B or not 2 B', rite?"

A little while ago, I was watching a documentary (as you do, when you're me, for fun) on the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s. They played most of this speech. I realized that I'd never actually heard the whole thing all at once before. And, I'll admit it, I teared up, I broke out into chills all over. Cliche, yes, but true. I found myself truly and deeply affected by something I thought I'd seen and heard a thousand times before.

Then a commentator, someone who knew Dr. King personally and was one of the men behind him at the podium, said something like, "And he's giving his speech and it's great. Then he stopped, and turned his paper over, put his hands down on the podium, and leaned back. He went off-script, and said, 'Even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.' Now those people in Washington that day didn't know it, but in that moment they stopped being at a protest on the National Mall and were brought into church." You can tell, once you know this, where it is that he moves from prepared speech to inspired witness-bearing.

So do me a favor. Take the 15 min to watch this. Watch the whole thing. Just sit, and watch, and listen. Feel it. Think about it. All the phrases and ideas in it that are no less truths for not having been neatly packaged and repeated until we no longer hear them. Listen. Think about how far we've come as a society. And think about how incredibly far we've yet to go. Let Dr. King witness to you.

I'm still alive. I haven't looked at my flist in forever. I desperately needed a break - Fandom and LJ were pissing me off unnecessarily b/c I was cranky and when it's not fun, it's time to step back, yo. Then I was sick with the death!cold for like a week and a half - I'm still a little peaky and phlegmy - and just stopped checking my email for a while so I owe people responses and will be trying to get through those.

Work is attempting to kill my soul but I persevere :-D. At least I've been busy, I HATE being bored, even if The Stupid is at record levels 'round here. *shakes head* Sometimes I do indeed miss academia - at least the people there were just sometimes clueless and flighty, not actively DUMB and incapable of, like, *claps hands sharply* TRACKING what I'm saying. *sighs impatiently* But my financial plans continue at an acceptable (read: TOO FUCKING SLOW MY GOD) pace as I browse and read blogs and do research re: grad school in the next couple of years.

Uh, yeah, that's about it! I'm doing good, chugging through life, feeling better about existence in general now that the sun is out both before AND after I leave work and Spring is on the wing or some other corny shit like that :-). We really need to clean the house. I've cut my cigarette consumption down by about half. Oh and when nancy_whiskey was here last weekend - we sat on my couch while I coughed and blew my nose, watching SGA, drinking heavily, and knitting (her)/crocheting (me) like old biddies - and I learned how to make these! SO FUN, OMG.

I've been LJ-AWOL for a while now and I'm likely to continue to be but I figure this is as good a "NOT DEAD YET!" as anything. ;-)

I've got a bunch of emails languishing in my inbox (...still? jesus...) and life is eating my soul. Nothing bad, but I've been hell-busy at work for like two weeks (which is, yes, a good thing because even though I whine, I'm much happier when kept occupied and made to feel useful), I'm much more used to my new space, I've made a few friendly work-acquaintances, I'm feeling much less like The Ick from mid-winter is dragging me under and all that. Things are good overall.

But I fail recently at social contact since most of my LJ time is done drive-by style while at work. There is LOVE, MAD LOVE and I'll be in touch with people again soon. No fear, I'm doing good, this is not me dropping off the map due to hiding-from-the-world, swear. I don't think I'll ever catch up with my flist again, but other than that, just taking care of myself, limiting myself (and things like 'communicative online time' at home) with stuff that tires me out, playing Sims2 (Faith is doing very well, thankyouforasking...) and watching Mah Shows.

And I am AFLAIL WITH FANNISH SQUEE as well! \o/ OH SHOWS. Supernatural, Torchwood and SGA have all recently made me EXTREMELY HAPPY.

I appear to have a shit-ton of cat hair on my sweater. DAMMIT.

See, I am a person who knows she talks A LOT. Words are my living, my fluffy pillow, my titanium shield, the fat marshmallows in my Ovaltine. You know those t-shirts that say "Jesus Is My Homeboy"? The English language is my homeboy.

This is so true of me that it deserves another paragraph or three. Y'all know I make my Very Hot mortgage payment by typing words in script form. Did you know that before I sacrificed my freakish ability at the altar of College Substance Experimentation, I was also a Spelling Bee champion? It's t-r-u-e. My seventh grade year, I was nine nerdy kids away from going to Washington to compete in the Nationals. (Remember that the next time you think you're the geekiest person you know. You know me.)

I have this inner sense of words, their little motors and gears, the weight of their individual letters, how they came to be. When I first read Lolita I cherished it for what it was: porn. Not kiddie porn - though there are a couple of nice moments if you're into that too - but word porn. I could feel Nabokov rolling around in the English language like Demi Moore on a bed full of a crisp nonsequential bills. I saw a kindred spirit - hey, I ain't saying I'll ever write like the dude, I'm just saying I feel where he's coming from.

...So, yeah, I heart me some blah blah blah.

That's what I'm over here in my little corner of fandom trying like hell to make with my silly, infrequent, little stories and that's what I read, Fandom, in your Very Best Fanfics. That's one of the reasons why I stopped reading fiction that came from stores -- in small, bound, rectagular sheafs of paper -- a while ago. I love Words and there are a lot of other Fannish people who love Words too.

Hi everyone! I'm alive! Happy New Year! I have over 50 unread/answered emails in my inbox! I'm not ignoring you, I just suck and haven't really been checking gmail or LJ since before I left for CT. I need a bagel. More [eta: not bagels, posts] later! I think...

So right now. My aunt is making my 14 year old cousin watch the online QVC video advertisement for some remote control cars that she bought for our younger cousins and the 14yo is like "THIS IS LAME. OMG. PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME WATCH THIS. I CAN CHARGE THEM AND PUT THEM TOGETHER WITHOUT WATCHING THE QVC VIDEO." And she's like, "No, watch it. It'll make it easier if you see it." And he's like, "I read the directions. I'm fine." and she's like "NO, because if you SEE it you can..." and he's like "CAN I PLEASE JUST WATCH FAMILY GUY."

And, in my head, I'm like "Um. You know it's bad when I'm agreeing with the 14yo boy. Let's watch Family Guy." And my aunt is all "AHHH, shut off that garbage, G. This show is terrible. Put on a Christmas movie. Get off the internet, G. Eat these cookies. BE FUCKING CHRISTMAS-Y."

And I sort of feel bad. Because I'm sitting here giggling at Family Guy and stealing internet from their neighbors on my laptop and possessing no desire to watch any Christmas movie and just...being a really bad role model.
